In an announcement that will further see international business, Amazon, brand as a market leader and an innovator, it has been announced that Amazon has been awarded a patent for a giant flying warehouse that will act as a Launchpad for their drones to deliver items within minutes.
The e-commerce company has plans for an airborne fulfilment centre such as an airship or blimp that would float at an altitude of 45,000.
Following the placement of the order, the drone will fly and deliver the package.
Amazon anticipates this to be cost effective and operate within a few minutes.
“When the UAV departs the AFC, it may descend from the high altitude of the AFC using little or no power other than to guide the UAV towards its delivery destination and/or to stablise the UAV as it descends,” the patent explains.
According to the patent documents, there are several purposes for the warehouse blimp. One example is where customers at a football match may want certain food or merchandise. They can place their orders ahead of the game and then receive them by drone during the match.
If Amazon is successful in its patent applications, they will require approval from aviation authorities, which may be complex.
